MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF METROPOLITAN POLICE <br /> COMMISSIONERS MEETING <br /> MARCH 18, 2004 <br /> <br /> The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Dr. Knierim welcomed everyone <br /> to the March 18th Police Commissioners Meeting. In attendance were; Commissioner's, <br /> Dr. Knierim, Chuck Berwick, and Dean Kays. Also present were; ChiefViles and <br /> Attorney Tim Currens. <br /> <br /> Commissioner Kays motioned to approve the minutes from the last meeting. <br /> Commissioner Berwick seconded. <br /> <br /> OLD BUSINESS <br /> Chief Viles gave an update on the two new officers; Chad Richart and Ryan Crist. They <br /> will be going to the academy in April. <br /> <br /> Dr. Knierim asked the Commissioners to look at the ordinance and SOP regarding the <br /> Reserves. Rick Overton has put together some information that he would like the <br /> Commissioners to review. This will be brought up at the next meeting after everyone has <br /> had the chance to review it. <br /> <br />Hiring requirements for Reserve Candidates was discussed, including hours of training <br />required and minimum and maximum age. <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS <br />Criteria for dismissing a Reserve Officer was discussed. It was determined that it was <br />strictly the discretion of the Police Chief. <br /> <br />It was also determined that the minimum age for a Reserve Officer would be 21. The <br />maximum age will be at the discretion of the Police Commission. <br /> <br />Chief Viles talked about the accommodations he has received on Rick Overton regarding <br />his performance. He also mentioned what an asset our two Reserve Officers, Kenny <br />Johnson & Rick Overton have been to the department. <br /> <br />Commissioner Berwick discussed the Zero Tolerance Policy. He wants something added <br />to the sOp's. Commissioner Kays brought up prescription medication; should this be <br />considered in the Zero Tolerance Policy? After a lengthy discussion, it was decided that <br />if an officer is taking a prescription that has a warning of any kind, such as may cause <br />drowsiness or do not operate heavy machinery, it is that officers responsibility to let his <br />or her supervisor know. At that point it will be up to the supervisor to decide if the officer <br />should continue to work, go home, or possibly ride with another officer. <br /> <br /> <br />
