MINUTES OF THE METROPOLITAN POLICE COMMISSIONERS MEETING JANUARY 20, 2005 The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Dr. Knierim welcomed everyone to the January 20th Police Commissioners Meeting. In attendance were Commissioners, Dr. Knierim, Chuck Berwick, and Dean Kays. Also in attendance was Chief Viles and Attorney Tim Currens. Commissioner Kays motioned to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Commissioner Berwick seconded. Commissioner Kays made the motion that Dr. Knierim remain the President for the Police Commission for 2005. Commissioner Berwick seconded. Dr. Knierim asked everyone in attendance if moving the meeting time from 7pm to 6pm would be convenient, with the third Thursday of the month remaining the same. Commissioner Kays motioned to approve, Commissioner Berwick seconded. NEW BUSINESS: Dr. Knierim mentioned that there was a position available for the Planning Commission. Town Council member, Troy Bryant asked that Dr. Knierim pass the word along to Police Officers since the position has to be filled by a town employee. They meet on the 4th Thursday of every month. Chief Viles said he would send out e-mail letting everyone know. OLD BUSINESS: ChiefViles explained that K-9, Barlow has a condition similar to arthritis called Hip Displacia. Officer Rogers has expressed his concern about Barlow's discomfort while riding in the car and has requested that Barlow be retired. Chief Viles asked the Commission to consider giving Barlow to Officer Rogers to care for after he retires, since Officer Rogers has had Barlow all along. The commissioners agreed. Dr. Knierim expressed an interest in asking the Town Council for 1 new officer. This is due to Lt. Forbes absence during his Military duty. Lt. Forbes is expected to be away for 16 to 18 months. Dr. Knierim said that the money is in the budget, therefore he wants to request a 22na officer. School Resource Officers-Chief Viles is applying for a grant for School Resource Officers. If approved, one would be assigned to the High School and the other would be at the Middle School. The grant is good for 3 years.
