MINUTES OF THE METROPOLITAN POLICE <br /> COMMISSIONERS MEETING <br /> JANUARY 20, 2005 <br /> <br />The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Dr. Knierim welcomed everyone <br />to the January 20th Police Commissioners Meeting. <br />In attendance were Commissioners, Dr. Knierim, Chuck Berwick, and Dean Kays. Also <br />in attendance was Chief Viles and Attorney Tim Currens. <br /> <br />Commissioner Kays motioned to approve the minutes from the last meeting. <br />Commissioner Berwick seconded. <br /> <br />Commissioner Kays made the motion that Dr. Knierim remain the President for the <br />Police Commission for 2005. Commissioner Berwick seconded. <br /> Dr. Knierim asked everyone in attendance if moving the meeting time from 7pm to 6pm <br /> would be convenient, with the third Thursday of the month remaining the same. <br /> Commissioner Kays motioned to approve, Commissioner Berwick seconded. <br /> <br /> NEW BUSINESS: <br /> Dr. Knierim mentioned that there was a position available for the Planning Commission. <br /> Town Council member, Troy Bryant asked that Dr. Knierim pass the word along to <br /> Police Officers since the position has to be filled by a town employee. They meet on the <br /> 4th Thursday of every month. Chief Viles said he would send out e-mail letting everyone <br /> know. <br /> <br /> OLD BUSINESS: <br /> ChiefViles explained that K-9, Barlow has a condition similar to arthritis called Hip <br /> Displacia. Officer Rogers has expressed his concern about Barlow's discomfort while <br /> riding in the car and has requested that Barlow be retired. Chief Viles asked the <br /> Commission to consider giving Barlow to Officer Rogers to care for after he retires, since <br /> Officer Rogers has had Barlow all along. The commissioners agreed. <br /> Dr. Knierim expressed an interest in asking the Town Council for 1 new officer. This is <br /> due to Lt. Forbes absence during his Military duty. Lt. Forbes is expected to be away for <br /> 16 to 18 months. Dr. Knierim said that the money is in the budget, therefore he wants to <br /> request a 22na officer. <br /> School Resource Officers-Chief Viles is applying for a grant for School Resource <br /> Officers. If approved, one would be assigned to the High School and the other would be <br /> at the Middle School. The grant is good for 3 years. <br /> <br /> <br />
