·

slight and consisted mostly of natural increases in the resident
population.

Between 1950 and 1970, Mooresville experienced a significant
growth spurt, owing to two major factors. The first was the post
World War II baby boom. The second was the tendency toward sub-
urbanization around major metropolitan centers. Mooresville's
population grew from 2250 in 1950 to 3856 in 1960 and 5800 in
1970. The growth was fostered by the ease of automobile trans-
portation to commute to employment in Indianapolis and by the
availability of newly constructed tract housing north of Carlisle
street.

The 1980 census for Mooresville showed a population drop to 5391,
but town officials challenged the figure. Multi-family housing
increased in number between 1970 and 1980, but the average house-
hold size dropped with the increased age of property owners.

The current population estimate for Brown Township, including
Mooresville, is 10,332, up 11% from the 9285 in 1980. Population
is expected to grow another 18% during the next decade and reach
11,091 in the year 2000.

There are several reasons for this. In the 1990's and beyond,
baby boomers will be having children of their own, but the aver-
age family size will be smaller than in previous decades. Subur-
banization will likely continue, but population growth will prob-
ably remain concentrated in suburbs of Indianapolis to the north
and~ast, rather than the southwest. Much of the population
growth between now and the end of the century will be attribut-
able to Mooresville's becoming a diversified, self-sufficient
small town, rather than a small town fundamentally dependent on
Marion County for employment opportunities.

Morgan County is estimated to have a population of 57,308 in
1988, up from 51,999 in 1980. By the year 2000, Morgan County is
estimated to grow to 62,240. This represents a rate of growth
slightly higher than that of Mooresville and Brown Township.
Indiana is expected to lose population between 1990 and 2000.

Thousands
80

eo

~~
//

40

20(- ''___>----.--------/

-----+ ,
¡=--~ .
o -~~~=--~~~f _-. -------=---L _--L..__--L__ 1 ..I
1Q().') 191(J 1920 HJ3Q 1',ì..(j Ig!;,O 1900 1970 1980 199ü ,000

'--

Figure 4, Population Growth.

Mooresv¡'le ..... «'('W'l !wp --+- "~ürgan Co

Existing Conditions 9

i
i
I
I
