~V
opinion on putting all hiring on hold until they know what the State is going to do with property
taxes. There are currently positions open in the Police Department, Clerk's office and
Stormwater Department. Councilman Langley stated that he would tend to agree with the idea of
waiting until they know what is going to happen. Vice President Cook stated that he also agreed
and would not want to hire someone and then have to lay them off. He stated that there is
already an interview process underway with the Police Department and that he would like fox
that process to continue, but stop short of actually hiring someone for now. Councilman.
Goodwin asked if they were referrirg to new positions or current positions that are already
budgeted and have been vacated. President Harris stated that he was referring to both.
Councilarxian Langley stated that he would like to la~ow mare about exactly what positions were
open, what impact the shortages were having on the departments and if overtime was increasing
due to the shortage. President Harris stated that there were currently two positions open for
police officers, with another coming open in April, one position of budgetary clerk in the clerk's
office and one part time stormwater laborer position. They were also considering the addition of
a stormwater controller, but that would be a new position. He also stated that he hopes to have
this resolved before the deadline for the Police Academy, which is May 22°d. Councilman
Goodwin. stated that while he certainly agrees that we should not create new positions, a freeze
on all hiring, especially within the police department, could negatively affect the ability to
perform the necessary services. President Harris stated he was only asking to wait another three
to four weeks. The Council agreed they would not stop the interviewing process that is currently
underway.
A motion was made by Vice President Cook to continue interviewing but put hiring on hold until
more information was available, however Councilman Langley stated that he did not feel a
motion was necessary, and therefore, there was na second.
Animal Control Officer, Mark Taylor, reported twenty-eight (28) calls, nine (9) impounds and
six (6) returns.
A motion to approve the payment of claims was made by Vice President Cook, second by
Councilman Langley.
