MOORESVILLE TOWN COUNCIL
RESOLUTION NO.
RESOLUTION SUPPORTING AND DEFENDING FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS
WHEREAS, The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of
America protects five essential areas of individual liberty, stating that: "Congress shall
make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or
abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble,
and to petition the government for a redress of grievances" (the "First Amendment Rights").
WHEREAS, the Town of Mooresville maintains a strong commitment to
supporting and protecting its residents' First Amendment Rights.
WHEREAS, in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak and social upheaval, the
Town of Mooresville observed and is alarmed by the federal government and other
jurisdictions within the United States, taking action to restrict First Amendment Rights,
including:
A. Curtailing religious liberties and infringing upon the right to freely exercise
religion by banning large gatherings for communal worship;
B. Abridging freedom of speech by promoting "cancel culture," in an overt
attempt to erase history, encourage lawlessness, silence citizens, and
prevent an open exchange of ideas, thoughts, and speech;
C. Encouraging television networks and so called "News Channels" to limit
facts and stamping out information that does not conform to their political
agendas, thereby preventing freedom of the press; and
D. Preventing peaceable assembly, including preventing citizens from
gathering to attend church services, sporting events, school functions, and
conduct business.
WHEREAS, the Town of Mooresville opposes the adoption of any law, ordinance,
rule, regulation, governmental action, or other similar restriction intended to limit and
infringe upon the individual liberties guaranteed to the residents of the Town of
Mooresville by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.
700221090
