MORGAN COUNTY HISTORIC PRESERVATION SOCIETY
P. O. Box 1377
Martinsville, Indiana 46151

Joanne StuRgen, President Steve Holloway, Vice President Sandy Crousore, Secretary Jane Burden, Treasurer
349-1537 831-7874 349-1060 342-6568

David Rosenbanm, Directoc Del Chafey, Director Henry Youngblood, Director
342-8244 342-6082 996-3433

Joe Beikman
Mooresville Town Hall
South Indiana Street
Mooresville, IN 46158

September 12, 1996

Dear Joe,

On behalf of Vice President Steve Holloway and the entire Morgan County
Historic Preservation Society, I would like to thank you for your time and
consideration of the Society's efforts to restore the historic Mathew Comer
House at 218 South Street, Mooresville, Indiana.

Sadly, the owner of the property has decided not to pursue its
restoration. She has said little to me; in fact~ communication between us has
been discontinued. I do know she was very upse~y Scott Daravanis's article
in the Times of August 28 which revealed the family's financial situation.

When the Mooresville Plan Commission meets again on September 26, you
will undoubtedly discuss and make a decision regarding this property. I have
no further requests and pleas for sparing the house. This letter is only
meant to thank you for your past support of the Society's efforts and to
inform you of the present situation.

Having spent many months arranging financing and repair of the house,
the Society's Board of Directors is very disappointed with the owner's
decision not to rebuild it as per plans I presented at the Plan Commission's
August meeting. However, we accept the owner's right to make all decisions
regarding the property, and while we respect her decision, we don't understand
or agree with it.

A contract signed by myself and the property owner and recorded in the
Morgan Courthouse gives the Society first right of refusal to purchase the
property should the owner decide to sell it. That is our last option to save
the historic Mathew Comer House, and it may, in all likelihood, come too late.

Again, we thank you for extending time to the Society to pursue the
restoration of this historic house. Your support of our efforts is greatly
valued and appreciated.

t~nt
Morgan County Historic Preservation Society
